Boondocking on the Colorado River Near Arches

About a month ago when Matt and I were planning to come to Arches National Park near Moab, Utah we saw campsites of BLM land near the park along the Colorado River. I hoped that we'd be able to get one but didn't want to get my hopes up because these campsites are first come first served and are a little competitive to get especially right now during the busy season.

Friday afternoon we checked out all the different campgrounds and sites and decided that we would arrive back Saturday morning around sunrise and wait for someone to leave so we could take their spot.

We got super lucky and got an amazing spot at the Big Bend campground that day and are loving it so far.

This is some rugged camping for sure. We had to come in with full water tanks because there's no water in this campground. There's also no electricity so we use our generator about 2 hours a day to charge our batteries in the Airstream for power.

Leaving civilization to camp in Airstream with no water hookups or power hookups has a great trade off. The views are amazing. I feel like I'm really out in the wilderness here! Here are some photos of our campsite and the views around us-

The only thing I'm not a fan of is having to take really quick showers and using the vault toilets (eww) at the campsite. We're trying not to use our toilet because the less we fill up our wastewater tanks and the less of our fresh water we use, the longer we can stay out here in the wilderness.

We're In Arches

Today we arrived in Moab, Utah, an awesome town full of adventurers (jeeps and off road vehicles are all the rage here).

We went into our first National Park of our journey- Arches. This place looks unreal and like nothing I've ever seen in real life.

The weather is also super. It's bright and sunny but still cool and springy outside. I think the high today was about 70 which was perfection.

I'm about to fall asleep as I write. If you know me (or Matt) you know we aren't exactly morning people but, so far on our trip we've been getting up around 6:30 or so. That means by 9 pm I'm ready for bed!

Today we mostly spent time traveling here, de-winterizing our rig (flushing our the antifreeze from the pipes this winter) and then went on a nice hike down park avenue in Arches. We will go back to Arches again tomorrow.

Tonight I made teriyaki chicken on the induction cook top.

Boondocking West Of Denver on I-70

Yesterday was a big travel day for us just getting from point A to point B and we really weren't interested in stopping until about 7pm for the night. So, we didn't want to pay too much for a camping spot since we would only be there to sleep since we were getting up early and hitting the road the next morning.

We found a website- freecampsites.net that directed us to the visitor's center in Eagle, Colorado so we tried it out. We called and asked if we could boondock overnight (camping without hook-ups) and they said yes. When we got there the parking lot was empty and was right next to The Eagle River! There was also a bathroom open 24 hours!

If you're looking for a free overnight spot on I-70 west just past Vail, CO the visitor's center in Eagle is great. By the time we went to sleep there were about 2 other cars in the lot that spent the night as well. Just down from the visitor's center is a parking lot for trucks to stay in also.

Yay for free camping with a bathroom!

Hello From Colorado!

Here I sit in the Airstream next to a stream in Eagle Colorado with free wi-fi! Matt and I left Russell Kansas (west Kansas- woof) this morning and headed to Denver. We made it to Denver around 3:30 and decided to keep on trekking! We made it over the beautiful Rocky Mountains on I-70. I loooved it, the mountains are so pretty and the little towns are so cute. I think this stretch of I-70 is maybe the most beautiful stretch of interstate in America.

When we got to Eagle with is a little past Vail, I pulled out the grill and made a little chicken Cesar Salad for dinner while 4 deer grazed in the grass in front of me. It was amazing! We also saw a few big horn sheep on the mountain pass today! That was unexpected and so cool.

Lastly, we stopped at a cute town called Idaho Springs where there's an old gold mine! While we were walking up to the gold mine we saw two guys fly fishing in one of the many beautiful streams and he caught a fish!

As you can see I'm loving life on the road so far. I'm amazed at everything we're seeing and I feel free as a bird with our home following behind us down the road.

P.S. I wasn't expecting snow still by May 2nd! Some of the ski areas look like they could still be open with all the snow still up here!
