Campground Reviews

Campground Reviews are based on a 5 Honk System!

Here is an explanation of our proprietary ranking system:
1 - Bad, wouldn't recommend it or go back if I can help it!
2 - Not too great, probably run down, overpriced or dirty.
3 - Ok campground but not great. Would stay here again if need be.
4 - Good place that's clean, good price, hopefully a few nice amenities.
5 - Great location, clean, fun amenities!

Big Bend BLM Campground - Colorado River in Moab, Utah

For $15 a night this place is in an amazing location near Moab and the entrance of Arches National Park! It's pretty rugged with no hookups and only a vault toilet but the whole reason to camp here is that your in a beautiful  secluded area literally on the Colorado River.

Fruita Campground - Capitol Reef National Park - Utah

This is a hidden gem! This campground has nice asphalt pads, nice bathrooms, and is in the middle of the national park. There's a great little pie and ice cream shop right next to the campground.

Great location in the park! Good bathrooms and in a wooded area with deer walking right through.

Watchman Campground - Zion National Park - Utah

Amazing location right on the river. The price for electric sites are great! The bathrooms are nice and the sites are pretty large.

This is a good campground with some sites near the river. Very wooded. This was a very busy campground in May and it was hard to get a spot. You have to aggressively scout one out because it's so popular. Bathrooms are ok.

Potwisha Campground - Sequoia National Park - California

Located in a nice wooded area but is about a 1 hour drive from the Sequoia trees. You are close to a beautiful area of the park on the river. Bathroom are ok and there were deer in the campground every night!

Great location in the park near the West Entrance. Pretty wooded campground near the river. Bathrooms are good. Elk walked through twice while we were there!

In Grant Village near the shower house. Good location to explore the southern area of the park. Near a lake! Saw an elk and a bear in this campground! Bathrooms are ok and sites are nice.

KOA Petaluma - California (45 min north of San Francisco)

Fantastic hot tub - just not open late enough!  Pool was heated until Halloween, then it got too cold...  Great job handling our mail and they kept up the grass at our site nicely.  We spent 3 1/2 months here, so we got to know some of the workers - most were friendly and helpful.  Great location for exploring wine country, but it is pricey like all KOA's.

Kirk Creek - Big Sur - California
5 Honks
No water, electricty, or sewer, but good restrooms.  We didn't go there for the amenities, but for the VIEW!  To call it Spectacular would be a huge understatement.  You grill dinner outside with 180 degrees of beautiful ocean views and fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks below.  For $25/night (rate just went up) you can't do any better in our opinion.  Sites were clean with large picnic tables, grills, and fire pits.

Great location, about as close to Yosemite as you can get. Bathrooms are ok, the lodge is out dated. Many sites right on the river with lots of trout fishing.

Soledad Canyon TT - California

Terribly dirty, nothing to do here and not close to any major attractions. This place has not been taken care of and is a dump.
UPDATE:

We went back to this campground in February 2014 and it has improved greatly. The pool and hot tub were clean and usable, the lounge was renovated and the whole campground was being improved. There are still lots of full time residents at this campground that take over the lounge and pool (sleeping on the couch in front on the TV and teenagers cuddling with their BF or GF listening to annoying music) but it is a good campground to go to if you want to visit LA which is about 35 minutes away. Thanks Thousand Trails for making this place nice again!

Lake Minden TT - California

Campsites around a small lake. Good for a 1-2 night stay if passing through the area.

Morgan Hill TT - California

Good location between San Francisco and Monterrey. Huge campground that was super busy in summer. The power went out everyday because it was really hot and everybody was trying to run their A/C. They have a nice large pool and campground activities.

Snowflower TT - California

Pretty wooded campground with a private lake. Fun place to canoe and they have a nice pool. I went hiking here and saw a bear! Great lodge with a lovely fireplace.

Bend/Sunriver TT - California

Nice campground with great pool and hot tub. Located on a pretty river.

Rancho Oso TT - Santa Barbara - California

Full Hookups
Really nice hot tub and 2 pools (1 heated).  Adult lounge typical of the others we've seen in a Thousand Trail campground.  Location is about 22 miles to downtown Santa Barbara, but it is up and over a small mountain to get there.  Very quiet, dark skies, friendly staff.  AT&T is not available, Verizon is about 2 bars at best of 3G.  Internet provided by the campground is ok for checking email.

Idyllwild TT- California
5 Honks
Full Hookups, great TV Antenna reception and cell reception!
I love this campground! It's on top of a mountain (7000 ft) and is a great mountain oasis. We visited in February which is their low season. There weren't many people here. The campground itself is beautiful, the lodge is fantastic with a beautiful fireplace and the weather was amazing (clear blue skies and 70 degree weather in February which I think is not always the case this time of year). Good wifi in the lodge and we could even get it in the Airstream. There's a fishing pond and pool that is open in summer that I'm sure would be really fun if we came back in the summer.

Pio Pico TT - near San Diego, California

Full Hookup sites were all full, so we ended up across the street with just water & electric.  Cell signal with AT&T was good enough for a call outside, but Verizon service was nada.  This campground was the closest Thousand Trails preserve to San Diego, so we used it for 4 nights to explore that area.  Pool & hot tub were both nice, but we really tried to spend as little time at the campground as possible.  Tip: Get here early so you can snag a full hookup site.

Palm Springs TT - California
5 Honks
Full Hookups, great TV Antenna reception and cell (AT&T & Verizon) reception!  Nestled in a 'forest' of Date Palm trees, the campground has a fantastic pool, spa, pickle ball courts (2), and really some of the most helpful TT staff.  Also, this place is PACKED!  We checked in about 30 minutes before you're suppose to, and we only found 2 available spots.  Getting a reservation was tough, you have to plan out pretty far, but it is certainly worth it.  Are we the youngest people in the campground?... Yes, by at least 20 years, but everyone is friendly and active!
